I sammenheng med dette har Russland stengt gasstilførselen til flere europeiske land, samtidig som EU har besluttet å boikotte russisk gass og kull. Det er fordi Europa i stor grad har strømpriser som settes av prisen på gass og kull. For å prissikre strøm for levering neste år, har prisen stadig gått opp i takt med råvareprisene.
